 42A.   What Is The Gospel?

Gospel literally translated means "good news." The word "gospel" is derive from the old English word "god-spell" or "godspell" which is a translation of the Greek word "evangelion".  "Evangelion" is the source of the term "evangelist" in English. In Christianity, the term "Gospel" can be used to mean different things, but in this study, we will generally refer to it as the "message of God" or the "Gospel of Christ".

42A.1   According to the Holy Scriptures, what is the Gospel?

In Luke 2:10-11, it is written:

And the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which shall be for all the people;
for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. (New American Standard)

The Gospel is the "good news" of great joy for all people.
It is about;

  • A Savior is born in the city of David
  • Who is Christ the Lord

42A.2   According to the Apostles,  What is the Gospel?

In Romans 1:16, Apostle Paul explains:

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. (NKJV)

The gospel is the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes.

42A.3   Why is the Gospel the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes?

In Romans 1:17 it is written:

For in the gospel  a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written:  "The righteous will live by faith." (NIV)

The gospel is the power of God because in it the righteousness of God is revealed.

42A.4  How did Apostle Paul described the true Gospel of Christ that he preached to the early Christians?

In Galatians 1: 10-12, Apostle Paul explained.

10. For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a servant of Christ.
11. But I make known to you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man.
12. For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through the revelation of Jesus Christ.
(NKJV)

The true Gospel of Christ that was preached by Apostle Paul is:

  • is not according to man
  • neither he received it from man
  • nor was taught to him by man,
  • but it came through the revelation of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Thus, the true Gospel of Christ is of God and not of man.
