How-D   Example: Determining Contradiction And Inconsistencies In The Verses Of The Bible

Step 1.

Let us study the verse "Acts 20:28" of the Bible:

  • The following are seven (V1 to V7) "sample verses" of Acts 20:28 of the Bible.

  • Please take note of the meaning of each "sample verse-V1 to V7" and consider the differences by comparing it with the other verses.

V1.  "Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the Church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood."

V2.  "Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers,  to shepherd the Church of God, which He purchased with His own blood."

V3.  "So keep watch over yourselves and over all the flock which the Holy Spirit has placed in your care.  Be shepherds of the Church of God, which he made his own through the blood of his Son."

V4.  Take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God which he obtained with the blood of his own Son.

V5.  Take heed unto yourselves, and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit hath made you bishops, to feed the church of the Lord which he purchased with his own blood.

V6.  "Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers.  Be shepherds of the Church of God, which he bought with his own blood."

V7.
"Take heed therefore to yourselves and to all the flock over which the Holy Spirit has appointed you overseers, to feed the Church of Christ which he has purchased with his Blood."

Have you noticed the differences in meaning of the "sample verses-V1 to V7" of Acts 20:28 and the possible contradiction of the "sample verses-V1 to V7" to the Biblical truth?

  • V1, V2 and V6 suggest that it was "God who bought or purchased the Church with his own blood."

  • V7 suggest that it was "Christ' who purchased the Church with his own blood".

  • V5 suggest that it was the "Lord" who purchased the Church with his own blood.

  • While other translation V3 and V4 suggest that "God made or obtained the Church as His own through or with the blood of His Son."

Step 2.

2A.   What are the "clear verses" that are contradicted by anyone of the "sample verses-V1 to V7"?

The following clear verses are clearly contradicted:
These following verses are statements of our Lord Jesus Christ:

John 4:24
"God is Spirit,  and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and  truth". (NKJV)

Luke 24:39
"Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself.  Handle Me, and see; for a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have." (NKJV))

2A.1   What is the Biblical truth that was clearly taught by the Lord Jesus Christ?

"God is a Spirit and a spirit does not have flesh and bones"  which is also the truth written in many verses in the whole Bible attesting that God is a Spirit in nature.

_____________

2B.   What are the other "clear verses" that are also contradicted by anyone of the "sample verses-V1 to V7"?

The following clear verses are also contradicted:

Revelations 1:5:
and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood. (New King James Version)

Hebrews 9:14:
How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our conscience from acts that will lead to death, so that we may serve the living God! (New International Version)

Romans 5:8-9:
But God has shown us how much he loves us --- it was while we were still sinners that Christ died for us!  By his blood we are now put right with God;  how much more, then,  will we be saved by him from God's anger! (Today's English Version)

1 Peter 1:18-19:
You know the worthless kind of life you got from your ancestors. You were not purchased from this with something that doesn't last, like silver or gold.  No, it was with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a perfect lamb; nothing is wrong with it (International English NT)

2B.1   What is the Biblical truth that was clearly taught by the Apostles?
Based on the "clear verses" above and in many verses in the new testament, the Biblical Truth is:

  • it was Christ who washed us from our sins in his own blood,

  • it was Christ who died for us and by his blood we are put right with God,

  • it was with the blood of Christ cleanse our conscience from acts that will lead to death, so that we may serve the living God,

  • and we were purchased with the precious blood of Christ.

Step 3.

Having known the Biblical Truth from the clear verses or passages dealing on the same subject.
Let us compare and determine which of the "sample verse" may be considered as "Inconsistent and/or Contradictory" and Why?

We may conclude that the following "sample verses V1,V2&V6" may be considered as "Inconsistent and/or Contradictory":

  • V1.  "Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the Church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood." (Acts 20:28)

  • V2.  "Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers,  to shepherd the Church of God, which He purchased with His own blood." (Acts 20:28)

  • V6.  "Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers.  Be shepherds of the Church of God, which he bought with his own blood." (Acts 20:28)

What are the reasons?

  • Because it contradict the clear passages or verses which says "God is a spirit" (Jn. 4:24) and a "spirit does not have flesh and bones" (Lk. 24:39), --- therefore has no blood.  Hence, God cannot possibly purchased or bought the Church with His own  blood.

  • And it also contradict the Biblical truth that:
    (1) it was was Christ and not God - who washed us from our sins in his own blood,
    (2) it was Christ and not God - who died for us and by his blood we are put right with God,
    (3) it was with the blood of Christ and not of God which cleanse our conscience from acts that will lead to death, so that we may serve the living God.
    (4) and it was Christ who purchased us with his precious blood.

______________

We may also conclude that the following
"sample verses V7, V5, V3, V4" can be considered as "Consistent and Non-Contradictory"  because no contradiction exist with the "clear verses" and are in conformity with the Biblical Truth written in the Bible.

V7.  "Take heed therefore to yourselves and to all the flock over which the Holy Spirit has appointed you overseers, to feed the Church of Christ which he has purchased with his Blood." (Acts 20:28)

Reason:  Because it expresses the biblical truth that it was Christ who died, shed blood and purchased the Church with His own blood.

V5.  Take heed unto yourselves, and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit hath made you bishops, to feed the Church of the Lord which he purchased with his own blood. (Acts 20:28)

Reason:  Because the Lord in the verse refers to the Lord Jesus Christ and not to the Lord God'.  In Acts 2:36, the biblical truth is clearly written:

"Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.'' (Acts 2:36, NKJV)

Because the Lord being referred to is the Lord Jesus Christ who was made Lord and Christ by God. Jesus is the Lord who was crucified and died, thus purchasing the Church with His own blood.

V3.   "So keep watch over yourselves and over all the flock which the Holy Spirit has placed in your care.  Be shepherds of the Church of God, which he made his own through the blood of his Son." (Acts 20:28)

V4.  Take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God which he obtained with the blood of his own Son. (Acts 20:28)

Reason:   The "sample verses-V3 and V4" are worded differently, thus eliminating the contradiction with clear biblical verses and also conform to the biblical truth. Please take note of the last part of the verses:

V3. . . . . . . Be shepherds of the Church of God, which he made his own through the blood of his Son.

V4. . . . . . . to care for the church of God which he obtained with the blood of his own Son.

Reason:  Because the above "sample verses- V3 and V4" clearly says that God made the Church His own or obtained the Church through the blood of His Son. This is in conformity to the biblical truth that it was really Christ and not God who purchased the Church with His own blood and that biblical fact is also corroborated by another biblical truth which says "God is a spirit" (JN 4:24) and "a spirit does not have flesh and bones" (Lk 24:39), --- therefore has no blood.

DISCLAIMER: The above example does not intend to make correction or cite that some versions of the bible are wrongly or incorrectly translated but is intended only to show the reality that there exist seemingly inconsistent and contradictory verses in the bibles we use today. The "sample verses" (V1 to V7) are given as an example to highlight the "contradictions and inconsistencies so people may realize and learn how to keenly notice such contradictions and inconsistencies in other verses as they continue to study and search for the truth written in the Holy Bible.
