Those who are created anew are born through the living and enduring word of God.
34E.1 What is to be undergone by those
who are to be born through the will, or word of God?
To
be born of God, a person must undergo death and rebirth of the old self.
First is the
death of the old self:
In Romans 6:3-4, we are told:
Do you not know
that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were
baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by
baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead
by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
(RSV)
The old self has to die first
and and be buried with Christ through baptism into his death.
Second is the
rebirth of the old self:
The same verse Romans 6:3-4, in the New International Version:
Or don't you know
that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized
into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism
into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead
through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. (NIV)
The old self has to be created
anew (reborn or born again).
In order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead (through
the glory of the Father) we too may live a new life.
